Lean Six Sigma (LSS)

Lean Six Sigma is a powerful methodology for improving your existing processes. The combined power of lean (used to remove waste and increase flow), and six sigma (used to reduce variation in a process) has saved company’s many thousands of dollars on each completed project, and improved overall quality of a product or service.  BlueSkye Track consults on lean six sigma projects, and provides training on a variety of focused process improvement tools.

LSS, the team approach

The results of extensive research indicate that collective (team-based) decision-making is a more productive process than individual decision-making.  By using Tools, the team will expedite problem analysis, solution development and improvement planning, including the implementation process.

Statistical: these are tools that use quantitative data (numbers, percents, measures); examples are:

  • Histograms

  • Run Charts

  • Pareto Diagram

Management:  these are tools that use qualitative information (experience, knowledge, creativity); examples are:

  • Brainstorming

  • Cause-effect Diagram

  • CTQ Diagram

  • Tree Diagram

  • Value Stream Map

A team will “combine” tools to help complete a DMAIC process.  Tools will also help with “critical thinking”: the process of DIVERGING and CONVERGING in order to accomplish a task. Confused over which tools to use and when to use them. Visit our training page; we partner with Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmout for certification in lean six sigma.

Lean Six Sigma Framework: DMAIC Methodology

The DMAIC methodology involves five steps: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.  This method is used to improve the current capabilities of an existing process.  This is by far the most commonly used methodology of improvement teams.

The DMAIC method is very robust.  Many organizations have used it successfully to produce dramatic improvements. It provides a framework for guiding a CQI initiative

  • It provides a common language for completing stages and tollgates

  • It prevents skipping critical steps in the CQI process

  • It enables you to improve the way in which you perform CQI
